Native bees provide the essential ecosystem service of pollination in both agricultural and natural areas. However, native bee populations are increasingly threatened due to agricultural intensification, habitat fragmentation and habitat loss. Ecological restoration has been proposed as a mechanism to promote bee conservation, though the key factors that contribute to successful restoration projects are under-studied. My research focuses on local and landscape processes that influence the restoration of native bee communities. Nesting resources play an essential role in shaping bee community dynamics; therefore I am currently working to develop a technique to enhance the assessment of potential nesting habitat in restored sites. In order to assess the economic benefits of enhanced pollination services, I am assessing foraging distances into crops and associated changes in yield, using sunflower as a model system. Finally, I plan to model spacing of hedgerow restorations in agricultural fields to optimize pollination services.
